What’s in the bag

Numbered in the order you’ll use them. One guide that teaches in order, one workbook that prices, plans and tracks, a first-customers plan with the words to use, and the agreement and truck cards that run every visit. Two components include an editable Word version, which is why 5 components make 7 files.

A closer look inside

Pages and spreadsheet views from the files you download, not mockups. Open any one to read it.

What you’ll be able to do

Each one names the file that does it.

  • Know what a route pays where you live

The route formula (accounts × price × cuts per year) with cuts per year by region, so the same twenty accounts don’t surprise you in November.

Playbook ch. 1 · Workbook · Season tab

  • Buy the right gear, used first

Commercial versus homeowner equipment, three tiers priced so the overbuilt one explains itself, the used-buying inspection, and the transport ladder from hatchback to trailer.

Playbook ch. 3 · Workbook · Budget tab

  • Get legitimate in one chapter

License, the insurance gap that catches lawn operators (your personal auto policy), sales tax on mowing, the tax basics, and the one line you don’t cross.

    Playbook ch. 4

  • Price the stop, not the lawn

Your rate, your timed minutes, drive, unload, fuel, wear, insurance and a replacement reserve become a weekly and a biweekly price per lot size, with the $25 lawn’s real hourly shown next to it.

Workbook · Stop Price and Quote tabs · Playbook ch. 5

  • Get your first ten accounts next to each other

A 60-day plan built around the houses beside every lawn you cut, with the estimate walk, the customers to turn down, and the words for all of it.

First Customers & Route Plan · Scripts & Messages

  • Run every visit the same way

The first-visit walk, the stop routine, the first cut, the rain day, safety by the numbers, the damage card and the maintenance card, all in the truck.

Route Day Cards · Service Agreement & Property Notes

  • Keep the route through the season

Summer skips by policy, prices raised in the slow season, the winter gap covered, renewals sent before the grass wakes up.

Playbook ch. 8 · Workbook · Route Board, Visit Log and Season tabs

Who it’s for

  • You want to make money mowing lawns: mow, trim, edge, blow off and some hand-weeding, sold as weekly accounts on a route.
  • You’re starting part-time, from your own car if you have to, with a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
  • You want real numbers for your region, not a headline income figure.
  • You’d rather have the agreement, the policies and the pricing math done up front than learn them from a bad July.

Who it’s not for

  • You want to fertilize or spray weeds, which this bag declines on page one and does not teach.
  • You want a full-service landscaping company: hedges, mulch, aeration, hardscape, tree work, snow, lights.
  • You want an income promise; the bag gives you the route formula, cuts per year by region and what solo operators report netting, winter gap included.
  • You already run a route and want growth strategy for a crew.

Six phases, one gate

Start Here gives you the roadmap, and every file shows where you are on it. Phase 3 ends at the gate: you’re ready for a paying account.

Read the Playbook chapter for the phase, use the Workbook tab it points to, check off the checklist, and move on. The Route Day Cards and the Service Agreement are the files you use every visit; the Workbook is the one you open every week.

  1. Understand it

You know what a mowing route pays where you live, which version you’re starting, and where the line is.

Start Here · region step · Playbook ch. 1–2
  2. Gear up and get legit

Gear bought used first, towing rules checked, insured, registered, sales-tax status checked, and three practice lawns done and timed.

Playbook ch. 3–4 · Workbook · Budget tab
  3. Price it and write your policies

Your stop price, minimum, biweekly upcharge and adders are set, and your rain, skip, tall-grass and payment policies are on paper.

Playbook ch. 5 · Workbook · Stop Price and Quote tabs · Service Agreement
    Ready for a paying account
  4. Get accounts, close together

Ten weekly accounts in one zone signed, day-zones assigned, twenty in sight.

First Customers & Route Plan · Scripts & Messages · Service Agreement & Property Notes · Playbook ch. 6
  5. Run the week

Walk, routine, gate check, logged, billed on card; rain days moved with one message.

Route Day Cards · Workbook · Route Board and Visit Log tabs · Playbook ch. 7
  6. Keep the route through the season

Summer skips by policy, prices raised on data in the slow season, the winter gap covered, spring renewals sent.

Playbook ch. 8 · Workbook · Season and Visit Log tabs

What it doesn’t do

  • No chemical treatments. Weed killers and other lawn treatments are licensed or regulated work in most states, and fertilizer is in some, so the bag gives you the one-paragraph rule, the verify path and the words to decline, not pages of regulation.
  • No landscaping-company breadth. The work is mowing, trimming, edging, blowing off and hand-weeding, sold as recurring accounts, and the Playbook names what falls outside it.
  • Not legal, tax, insurance or safety advice. Every rule that depends on your state or city carries a Verify note with the way to find your answer.

How it was made

  • Researched in August 2026 across six areas: startup costs and equipment, services and pricing, operations and safety, legal and tax, customer acquisition and agreements, and the beginner experience.
  • The register holds 375 dated entries; those worth bookmarking are in the Playbook’s sources section. Prices come from company menus in six metros and two national platforms.
  • Legal and tax rules come from EPA, state agencies, state revenue departments, the IRS and the Department of Labor; safety numbers from OSHA, CPSC and university extension services. The workbook is generated from code and tested, awkward inputs included.
  • A separate review pass, done apart from the writing, looked for reasons a customer would not trust the files, and its findings were fixed before release.

Before you buy

The questions people ask about this bag. More on the support page.

What exactly do I get, and how?

A ZIP with 5 components in 7 files: 4 PDF guides (50 pages total), 1 spreadsheet (.xlsx, seven tabs) and 2 editable Word documents (.docx). Two components come as a pair: the First Customers & Route Plan (PDF) with its Scripts (Word), and the Route Day Cards (PDF) with the Service Agreement & Property Notes (Word). Checkout is on Payhip. The ZIP is on screen and in Payhip’s email right after payment; keep the email, and if you ever lose it we re-send the files free.

Does it cover fertilizing and weed control?

No, on purpose. Applying weed killers, insect or fungus products, weed-and-feed, or (in several states) fertilizer for pay requires a state applicator license nearly everywhere. The bag gives you the rule in one paragraph, the way to verify it for your state, and the words to decline and refer the customer.

I’m in Florida. Will it work for me? What about Minnesota?

Both. The first thing Start Here asks you to do is pick your region (cool-season, transition or warm-season grass), and the Playbook, the Workbook’s Season tab and the mowing heights all follow from it. The Season tab comes with presets for each region that you overwrite with your own months.

Does the spreadsheet work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Standard formulas only, no macros; dropdowns and data validation carry over. Yellow cells are yours, gray cells calculate.

I’m a teenager. Is this for me?

The teen and part-time path is written into the Playbook: starting with a used mower in a car, reinvesting, and what needs a parent’s name alongside yours (a bank account, a card processor, insurance, the agreement). It also explains the federal rule that a 14- or 15-year-old employee may not run a power mower, which matters the day you bring a friend.

Does it promise income?

No. It gives you the route formula (accounts × price per visit × cuts per year), cuts per year by region, what solo operators report netting, and a Season tab that shows your winter gap. A headline income figure for a beginner would be a guess, so there isn’t one.

Is this a course or a subscription?

Neither. One purchase, one download, yours to keep. No login, no videos, no upsells inside the files.

Can I get a refund?

A full refund if you haven’t downloaded anything; all sales are final once you have, with four exceptions: a duplicate charge, a file we can’t deliver or fix, a product that differs materially from this page, or where the law requires a refund. This page lists every file inside, with its size and purpose, so you know what you’re buying. Read the refund policy.
